About Me

Throughout my career as a  university professor, I always maintained a home piano studio, with a 7' Steinway grand, so that I could  teach younger children.  I have been a tenured faculty member in the School of Music, Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY.  I also held faculty positions at: The University of Virginia, Charlottesville; Meredith College, Raleigh, NC; The University of Memphis, TN; Rhodes College, Memphis, TN; and Washington State University, Spokane, WA. Also, I served as Dean of Faculty and Students at the Westchester Conservatory of Music, White Plains, NY. Dr. Schmidt teaches piano at the Academy of Music at St. Francis in the Fields, Harrods Creek, KY.

Education and Background

Dr Schmidt studied piano at the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland; Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria. Later, she earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Magna Cum Laude, from Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY. She went on to earn her Master of Music in Music Education at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, and her Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL.

What I Teach
I love working with students, both children and adults, and discovering what each individual needs in order to learn successfully. I nurture a love for music and piano in all my students through the presentation of stimulating repertoire that they enjoy learning and practicing. Students learn to read notation, develop keyboard facility and strong finger technique, and achieve musically-expressive performance, the components of lifelong, joyful music making.
