From the farmlands of Iowa, James joined the Gist staff in May of 2009. James began studying classical, jazz and piano improv from 4yrs old until he graduated from Le’Ecole De La Musica at age 18. In college, he majored in voice and music ministry. Then, in 2001, James took a job managing Simon’s Music. When West Music purchased Simon’s in 2004, James became their Certified Steinway Piano Specialist. Today, in addition to his leadership responsibilities at Gist Piano Center, James travels across the United States giving seminars on music education and piano technology and he writes the monthly "Tech Beat" column for Music Inc. Magazine.

[Update – 1/30/17] Road work appears to have moved away from our store. All directions to our building are currently open – despite some signs that still say “ROAD CLOSED.” All roads are currently open (though they are a bit more bumpy than usual). Please drive cautiously as always, but you should have no problems getting in and out of our store now!
[Update – 1/9/17] Road work continues as MSD moves up and down our road. Access to Gist is difficult, but still possible. As of the end of this day, you will want to take the Taylor Ave. exit (Taylor Ave to Jackson Ave to Lincoln Ave) from Poplar Level to get to us. See the map to the right for more info.
For the past few days, Louisville’s Metropolitan Sewer Department (MSD) has been upgrading the sewer lines in our section of town and – as a result – have had to shut down sections of Lincoln Avenue. Specifically, the path between our store and Wendys is currently closed. The ONLY way to get in and out of our parking lot is to take the Frisch’s Big Boy exit from Poplar Level Road (between Frisch’s and Speedway) and drive to our store from there.
Just ignore the “Road Closed” signs. They won’t block you from our driveway.
If you get stuck trying to find your way to us, just call us at 502-451-1831 (ext 200) and we’ll help you find our store.
MSD hopes to have the work completed in the next few days, but we thought you’d appreciate a little “heads up” ahead of time.
We are still here and ready to serve you in 2017! Happy New Year, Louisville!
PS – This is a tricky intersection – especially right now – so we made this map up for you to help clarify what we’re talking about. Thank you – in advance – for your patience as the City does its work.

Gist Piano Center and the SMC Corporation, US are proud to announce a new partnership between Gist and the Seiler Piano Company. This partnership gives Louisville and surrounding area residents their first-ever access to the legendary line of Seiler pianos.
Since 1849, the Seiler family has been handcrafting World-class pianos in Kitzingen Germany. Considered by many to the be finest pianos made in the World, these limited-production instruments have (until recently) only been available to the European Piano Market. However, in 2008, the SMC Corporation purchased the Seiler company, the factory and even the forest from which Seiler pianos get much of their wood. Now, not only are Seiler pianos coming to America in a big way, but they are also taking the Internet by storm.
These incredible instruments now come in three distinct lines. The handcrafted German Seiler models remain at the very height of piano building. For the most discerning pianists, these instruments offer unparalleled performance and beauty. For serious players, teachers and universities, the Edward Seiler line is derived from the most popular German models and handcrafted in Indonesia – bringing the World-class quality of Seiler pianos to an entirely new (and more budget-conscious) clientele. Johannes Seiler pianos also feature World-class German engineering at an attractive price for all budget ranges.
Together, the three lines of Seiler pianos give Louisville-area residents their first taste of German engineering at its best with a European tonal flair. They are a definite delight to the senses – as well as an affordable option for any home.
Come in and explore the all-new Seiler pianos at Gist Piano Center and join us in wishing Seiler a warm “willkommen” to Louisville!
If you’re a member of our Partners In Education Program and you have students between the ages of 10 and 18 who can play a Christmas song or a Jim Brickman song, you will want to pay close attention to this blog. Your students could win the unbelievable opportunity to perform with five-time platinum-selling pianist, Jim Brickman – LIVE ON STAGE!
[UPDATE] Signups are closed now, but we have a wonderful selection of students who will perform for Jim on Saturday, November 5. The program will begin at 10am and run until about noon.
Jim is looking for a great performance, original ideas and features from The Roland LX-17 included in the performance. The song must be a Christmas song or a Jim Brickman tune. If you’d like to schedule a private coaching session in Louisville with James before November 5, contact him at 502-451-1831 x200. James is available this week from 10am – 6pm (except for Tuesday).
Jim will chose one or two students to perform with him… but all performers will get to meet Jim in person and will have a wonderful, uplifting experience. Don’t let YOUR kids miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime memory!
